Future Leaders For Animal Rescue

Turning passion for animals into real world action

What happens when a team of Gateway High students unite for their shared passion? An experience that lends to real world skills and self-confidence that has a lifelong impact.

The team

Jocelyn, David and Jesus were brought together by their shared vision of helping animals. The team researched various ways of how they could contribute to the well-being of animals and settled on the perfect organization, Rocket Dog rescue. The popular volunteer based organization was partnered up with the trio to create a sustainable plan to put their passion into action.

The plan

Rocket Dog Rescue trained the students through their certification program which allowed them to participate in weekly mobile adoption events at local venues. The group also held fundraisers at their school bringing a few dogs help raise awareness for saving homeless or abused dogs.

Jocelyn, David and Jesus are excited to be making a direct and positive impact in the lives of the animals, fellow students, and other members of their local community. Working directly with the animals has been inspiring and greatly rewarding for all involved.

Award Winning Projects

	Eliza is a student at Alameda Community Learning Center who organized a benefit fashion show. She raised $1350 through ticket sales, raffle and a silent auction to donate to The Princess Project. She was inspired to help young women and she was the winner of the Collaboration Award for 2010.

	Cynthia Gutierrez from Skyline High School worked together with Angelica Estrada to create an art gallery for students at their school to express their passions. Both Cynthia and Angelica wanted to create more culture at their school and were awarded the School Contribution Award for 2010.

	From Oakland High School, Justin Li had the vision and ingenuity to lead the an after-school club at Franklin Elementary School in Oakland where students participated in innovative and engaging projects ranging from using solar power to making ice cream. Through his hard work and dedication, dozens of students have been inspired and Justin received the Innovation Award for 2009.

	Jimmy Zhang made phone calls, sent emails and ran into wall after wall in trying to realize his dream of integrating biking into the everyday lives of the students around him. This Thurgood Marshal High School student held multiple breakfasts at his school to reward those students who biked to school. He proved that with grit and determination, anything is possible. He was the Resilience Award Winner in 2009.

	This Berkeley High School student partnered with Beads for Life to save countless lives and change the futures of young women in Uganda. Cara’s project raised over $8,000 and she was the winner of the Philanthropy Award in 2009.
	Reza Rezvani of Albany High School organized a spring cleaning drive and benefit concert. He raised almost a thousand dollars at the concert which he gave to several different poverty-focused organizations. Reza’s work was honored when he was named the Collaboration Award Winner for 2008.

	Corey Evans of Albany High started After School Rock Class, a program which teaches fifth and sixth graders the basics of rock and roll. After School Rock Class has impacted many people, and Corey’s achievements were honored when she was named the FLI Legacy Award Winner for 2008.

	Sparkle Allen of Oakland High School used her passion for dance and organized a performance event titled “From Nothin’ to Somethin’”to benefit homeless youth. The event raised hundreds of dollars for Dreamcatcher Homeless Shelter for Teens Sparkle was the recipient of the Resilience Award for 2008.

	Ilya Pinsky of Alameda Community Learning Center worked diligently to pass a parcel tax that would offset $4.5 million of state budget cuts to education in Alameda. He mobilized hundreds of volunteers to contact more than 10,000 voters, distributed hundreds of lawn signs, and formed a special committee to write articles for the local newspaper. Ilya was honored by being named the Community Impact Award winner for 2008.




	Carmel Dunlap of Berkeley High partnered with Ayeen Telopa to organize TRASH to TREASURES, a recycled fashion show featuring clothes they created. The girls raised hundreds of dollars for Rock Paper Scissors Collective in Oakland. For their creativity and effectiveness, Carmel & Ayeen received the Innovation Award for 2008.

	Richard Chen of Oakland High used his passion for anatomy to organize fetal pig dissection lessons with more than twenty students at Edna Brewer Middle School in Oakland. He led an online virtual tour of the pig’s body and organ systems and the hands-on fetal pig dissection. Richard received the Innocation Award for 2008.



	Sasha Ginzberg of Berkeley High organized a teen run dinner that benefited Vital Life Services (VLS), a non-profit organization in Oakland that provides daily services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Over one hundred people attended her dinner, and Sasha raised over $7,000 for Vital Life Services. Sasha was given the Philanthropy Award for 2008.




	Lyla Foley of Albany High. She utilized her passion for acceptance to make her school’s culture safer for LGBTQ students and teachers. She taught hundreds of students in every Albany High freshman health class about the issue and is working towards making her lessons a permanent part of school’s health curriculum. Lyla was given the School Contribution Award for 2008.
